Android Ice Cream Sandwich on the Galaxy Nexus

Samsung Galaxy NexusThe Samsung Galaxy Nexus is one of the most highly anticipated smartphones of 2011.
With an impressive 4.65 inch Super AMOLED screen the phone measures 136 by 68 mm and is just 9mm thick

It comes with a screen resolution of 1280 x 720 pixels and 316 ppi. The result is that it is both attractive and powerful. Yet as the first device to be powered by Android 4.0, or Ice Cream Sandwich, it has the smartphone world enthused about what the device and its operating system might hold, with updates along other Android devices not expected until 2012.

So how has the device been received now that it has been launched in the UK and ahead of its release in the US, Canada and Japan? Such phrases as “ground-breaking”, “a phone that changes the industry forever” and a “gasp of awe” suggest that hyperbole is not far off from the review section yet one reviewer says despite it being impressive it doesn’t quite meet expectations. Android 4.0 they add ensures that Google “comes of age” but while it was glossy at its launch it now feels messy. It is a little “cluttered”, “disjointed” and “overly complicated”.

Despite their concerns about the operating system the device itself is attractive. It is typical of Samsung’s Galaxy range, hardly a surprise when the manufacturer has hit on such a winner this year with the Galaxy S2, but the same reviewer describes its performance as excellent. A second review discusses the phone’s attributes itself, in particular its screen resolution and display. The display, this reviewer says, is even better than the Galaxy S2. Watching 1080p video is great and the device comes with a touch sensitive panel and multi-tasking button that allows users to check what apps are running while they are browsing.

Galaxy Nexus - More Fluid and Intuitive

Compared with its hugely popular predecessor it is “more fluid and intuitive”, and when it comes to the camera the shutter lag is almost zero. The only drawback is ringtone volumes that are too low. The Android 4.0 feature of Face Unlock is a little hit and miss. In a low light area, like indoors, it tends not to work so well, which will probably be frustrating for users.

Despite some of the criticisms Ice Cream Sandwich finally provides the hardware with the OS it deserves says another review. Shareable Wi-Fi, the ability to search email. These may seem like small features but are important to smartphone users and do what they are meant to, just make life a little easier.

In terms of the Galaxy Nexus itself there is a better spellchecking facility on its keyboard a browser that lets you save web pages to read online, a better calendar and improved camera.

2011 has been a phenomenally successful year for Android phone deals and while users in the US, Canada and Japan wait for the launch of the new device that will bring them Android 4.0 the reviews will be heartening.

The S2 has made this a memorable year for Samsung and smartphone users alike. That the Nexus is spoken of in the same terms means they could finish the year in the same way they started, with a real winner on their hands. While the Galaxy Nexus may currently be overshadowed by the iPhone 4S in the popular media, the phone can only signal even better time for Android in 2012 and beyond.
